Grace Whiteside

Through an interdisciplinary practice that often utilizes blown glass, video and performance, Whiteside’s work derives from their guttural disapproval of binary structures that exist within most entertainment and advertisement industries. Whiteside often borrows from familiar platforms such as sitcoms, talk shows, infomercials, and motivational lectures to construct the framework for their performances and videos where queer and trans visibility is optimized and celebrated instead of ignored. Whiteside’s work aims to detach these stages from their preexisting markets, allowing space for impulsive performance characters that consciously practice absurd homoeroticism, often through an interaction with blown glass in its molten or solid state. Whiteside’s characters explore and sample the material’s queer amorphous properties, building multifaceted relationships with glass while also potentially relating to the public through a familiar and recognizable lens.
